Unprecedented’ Google-Mandiant Integration In Full Swing: Cloud Security VP

Google Cloud and Mandiant integrations and synergies are already well underway as the cloud superstar invests billions to make cybersecurity a major market differentiator against its cloud and on-premises rivals.

“We’ve already outlined the major areas of investment,” said Jeff Reed, vice president of product for Google Cloud Security, in an interview with CRN. “So threat intelligence integration, their proactive controls and bringing those together—that is already off and running.”

Reed, a 20-plus-year security veteran who has held top cyber roles at Symantec and Cisco Systems, said Google’s acquisition of Mandiant is “unprecedented” for the search and cloud giant.

“Nothing else is even like it in terms of the amount of security capabilities that we’ve brought into Google Cloud,” said Reed.

Google’s $5.4 Billion Buy Of Mandiant

In September, Mountain View, Calif.-based Google acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion.

The acquisition gives Google Cloud real-time, in-depth threat intelligence technology and expertise that Mandiant has built from working with the largest organizations in the world on the frontlines of cybersecurity.

Mandiant has retained the Mandiant brand as now part of Google Cloud.

With the scale of Google’s data processing, novel analytics approaches with AI and machine learning and a focus on eliminating entire classes of threats, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian recently said the combined company “will help organizations reinvent security to meet the requirements of our rapidly changing world.”

Google Cloud Versus AWS, Microsoft Azure

In an interview with CRN, Reed explains the integration road map ahead with Google Cloud and Mandiant, as well as the main reasons Google differentiates itself from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in cloud security.

“You can bring on all of your data at a much lower price point. And you can search it in under a second,” said Reed. “Our system is set like that because of the way we built it. We’re Google, right? We’re indexing enormous amounts of data and searching it. We’re bringing in data from everywhere.”
