Microsoft has teamed with Accenture, GitHub, ThoughtWorks and the Linux Foundation to launch the Green Software Foundation, with the aim of making software engineering more environmentally sustainable.
“The scientific consensus is clear: the world confronts an urgent carbon problem. It will take all of us working together to create innovative solutions to drastically reduce emissions,” Microsoft president Brad Smith writes in a press release.
“Today, Microsoft is joining with organisations who are serious about an environmentally sustainable future to drive adoption of green software development to help our customers and partners around the world reduce their carbon footprint.”
The organisation has not yet announced any targets, or detailed the tangible steps it will take in this pursuit.
Microsoft has previously pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030.
