Huawei and partners receive GSMA Global Mobile LATAM award for Tech4Nature México project to protect jaguars

/PRNewswire/ — Huawei yesterday received the Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM Award for Social Impact in Latin America from its Tech4Nature – Dzilam project at Bravo Nature Reserve in Yucatan, Mexico. The GLOMO, which was awarded by the GSMA during the M360 LATAM 2026 exhibition, recognizes the project’s contribution to environmental conservation by using technology to protect jaguars in the reserve.

As part of the global Tech4Nature partnership between the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Huawei TECH4ALL, the Mexican project uses advanced technological tools to monitor and preserve the natural habitat of the jaguar, an iconic and endangered species in the Yucatan.

“This recognition reflects the power of technology when put to the service of people and the planet,” says Samira Herrera, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Huawei Mexico. “Tech4Nature México is an example of how cross-sector collaboration can have a tangible positive impact on communities and biodiversity conservation.”

The project, which began in 2022 and is currently in its second phase, is the result of a collaboration between IUCN, Huawei, the Yucatán State Government, C Minds, the Polytechnic University of Yucatán (UPY) and the local community of Dzilam de Bravo. The solution integrates AI species detection and individual identification, community-led monitoring and governance, and cross-sector collaboration between government, academia, civil society and the private sector.

“Tech4Nature México demonstrates that the true potential of technology lies in transforming data into coordination, collective action and public policies for the protection of nature. Through multi-sector collaboration focused on communities and human rights, the initiative puts tools like artificial intelligence at the service of ecosystems that support our economies and our future,” says Regina Cervera, project coordinator for Tech4Nature México of AI for Climate at C Minds.

Since the launch of the project, 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices deployed in the reserve have made it possible to identify more than 147 species, 40 of which are threatened. The system identified 16 jaguars, providing essential information to understand the behavior, movements and conservation measures that could protect the species, which plays a key role in the environmental balance of the reserve.

Huawei’s cloud-based solutions are used to process and analyze field data. In addition to video footage of the jaguars, more than 100,000 images and 600,000 audio recordings were captured and automatically analyzed by the system, strengthening monitoring of local wildlife and the ecosystems they inhabit. The data collected allows us to better understand the ecosystem and make more effective decisions regarding biodiversity conservation, which have an impact on public policies. Beyond the ecological data, the effects on the landscape are visible: the protected area has increased from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares.

Technologies such as AI, cloud storage and data analysis have enabled the Tech4Nature México project to create a sustainable conservation model that combines scientific innovation and community participation. Alongside these technologies, Huawei’s wireless connectivity solutions form a vital aspect of environmental data transmission in Tech4Nature projects, a theme that has attracted keen interest at M360 LATAM 2026. The May 13-14 event brought together regional and global leaders from the technology ecosystem, mobile networks, governments and connected industries to discuss how to harness the power of technology and work towards a better future for all. The GLOMO LATAM Awards recognize changemakers who are redefining technology, connectivity and social progress in the region. The award given to the TechNature Mexico project recognizes the solution for its innovation and its ability to generate significant social and environmental benefits for Latin America.

With Tech4Nature México, Huawei reaffirms its commitment to using technology as a tool to build a more sustainable and inclusive future, carrying out projects that contribute to the protection of the environment and the development of communities.
