/PRNewswire/ — Marking a new milestone in bilateral relations, Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing paid his first state visit to China from June 15 to 19, opening a new chapter of in-depth and multifaceted pragmatic cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
Visiting the headquarters of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited in Beijing and traveling between the Chinese capital and Shanghai on the Fuxing high-speed train, the Myanmar president witnessed China’s progress in development and expressed his country’s firm desire to further deepen practical cooperation with China in the field of infrastructure.
During this fruitful visit, the two countries signed a series of cooperation agreements, thus consolidating their long-standing friendship, symbolized by the “pauk-phaw”.
During a meeting with Min Aung Hlaing on Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said China is willing to share development experience with Myanmar and jointly build a China-Myanmar community with a common future based on political friendship and mutual trust, win-win development, security coordination and people-to-people exchanges.
For years, China has remained Myanmar’s largest trading partner, its main source of imports and its largest source of investment. Bilateral trade reached $19.4 billion in 2025, an increase of 19.1% year-on-year.
Characterized by strong structural complementarity, the trade ecosystem sees China exporting electromechanical equipment and vehicles to Myanmar, while importing high-quality agricultural products and mineral resources from the country, forming a stable and mutually beneficial industrial and trade cycle.
A real milestone in cooperation within the framework of the “Belt and Road” initiative, the China-Myanmar economic corridor has now entered a phase of accelerated development. A set of flagship projects, including Yangon New Town, Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone and the China-Myanmar Railway, have gradually taken shape, providing a solid framework for the construction of the corridor.
These major transport infrastructure projects have effectively promoted Myanmar’s industrial modernization and improved the living conditions of local people, providing considerable impetus to cross-border economic integration.
During Tuesday’s talks, Xi reaffirmed that the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor is a flagship project of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The two sides should continuously advance the implementation of major projects while ensuring safety and security, and help Myanmar develop its economy and improve the living conditions of its people, he said.
China, Xi added, is ready to implement more “small and beautiful” aid programs and jointly publicize the examples of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
China and Myanmar on Tuesday issued a lengthy joint statement aimed at accelerating the construction of a community with a shared future between the two countries, so as to further benefit the people of the two nations.
Testifying to the depth and breadth of bilateral relations, the two sides signed several cooperation agreements covering transportation, science and technology, intellectual property rights, human resources development, public health and media.
Bilateral and multilateral cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat cross-border criminal activities was also highlighted during the visit, with China and Myanmar expressing support for the creation of an international alliance against cyber fraud in the telecommunications sector.
In recent months, through joint law enforcement coordination, China and Myanmar have carried out a crackdown on criminal networks specializing in telecom fraud in northern Myanmar, effectively contributing to maintaining peace and stability along the border, as well as the security of people and property of the people of the two countries.
During the talks, Xi said the two sides should continue to combat criminal activities, including online gambling, telecom fraud and drug trafficking, and fully protect the interests and security of the two peoples.
For his part, Min Aung Hlaing said Myanmar is ready to work closely with China to resolutely combat online gambling and fraud in the telecommunications sector, as well as safeguard security and stability in border areas.
Qu Jianwen, director of the Southeast Asian Studies Association of Yunnan Province, wrote that the Myanmar president’s visit to China perfectly illustrates the strength and growing momentum of bilateral cooperation.
