With nearly 50 energy storage fires reported worldwide last year, thermal runaway has emerged as the industry’s biggest safety problem.

Together, these technologies are redefining the security of energy storage, from the microscopic material level to the complete system architecture.
Traditional liquid electrolyte lithium-ion batteries are inherently susceptible to physical damage and thermal instability. In contrast, Wanxiang A123’s Star Series semi-solid-state cell exhibited unprecedented intrinsic safety. In a rigorous test in which ten steel needles pierced the cell simultaneously, the battery showed no fire or smoke and no thermal spread occurred.
This performance is made possible by Wanxiang A123’s proprietary “Full-Domain Ice Sealing” technology, which fixes the electrolyte in a semi-solid state, significantly reducing reactivity under mechanical stress. Additional protection is provided by an internal safety grille and an external armor layer that prevents internal short circuits even in extreme temperatures.
To improve system-level thermal management and eliminate uneven heat distribution, the Star River Series utilizes advanced immersion cooling, in which cells are completely immersed in a dielectric, electrically insulating cooling medium. Operating data shows that even at ambient temperatures of 45°C, the temperature deviation between cells remains less than 2.6°C. In the event of a cell failure, the cooling medium acts as a liquid thermal shield, quickly absorbing heat and physically blocking thermal spread.
The platform is deployed in four specialized solutions tailored to high-risk and mission-critical applications. The HVDC data center solution is based on an 800V architecture that eliminates the need for redundant inverters and increases system efficiency by more than 4%. For outdoor installations, IP68-rated enclosures ensure durability in extreme environments. For offshore and transport-restricted applications, a modular 5-foot container is available based on the 5HC shipping standard that addresses weight limitations, while a highly integrated 20-foot container integrates a proprietary zero-level lock structure and two fire suppression systems.
Additionally, Wanxiang A123’s wireless BMS platform increases system intelligence. It integrates pressure sensors that can detect internal pressure changes and issue safety alerts up to 10 minutes earlier than traditional monitoring methods.
