Shaping the future together | Huawei publishes the top 10 charging infrastructure industry trends until 2026

/PRNewswire/ — On January 16, Huawei released the top 10 charging network industry trends of 2026. Wang Zhiwu, President of Smart Charging Network at Huawei, gave a comprehensive assessment of the industry and technology trends.

Trend 1: Development with high quality standards

Jointly Charging the Road Ahead | Huawei Releases Top 10 Trends of Charging Network Industry 2026

From passenger cars to commercial vehicles, “high quality” has become a must for ultra-fast charging infrastructure, which has led to large-scale upgrades of older chargers to meet the energy needs of different vehicle models. High-quality development will expand from “ultra-fast charging cities” to “megawatt charging cities” through unified planning, standards, monitoring and operation and maintenance, enabling industry partners to convert high quality into high returns.

Trend2: Comprehensive ultra-fast charging

Ultra-fast charging vehicle models, once a luxury item, will soon be available to everyone. The extensive use of third-generation semiconductor materials and high C-rate traction batteries will further increase the market share of ultra-fast charging vehicles. Megawatt chargeable commercial vehicles will dominate the market.

Trend 3: Electrification of logistics in the megawatt range

The fuel-to-electricity transition for profitable businesses will see heavy-duty vehicles move quickly from limited, closed applications to widespread, all-encompassing use. The reduction in the cost of traction batteries and the innovation of megawatt charging technologies will make the electrification of logistics at the megawatt scale an unstoppable trend, bringing significant economic and social benefits.

Trend4: Hundred megawatt stations

In the trend of electrified logistics, charging stations on a 100 MW scale are becoming indispensable infrastructure for high-throughput operations. Factors such as technical strengths, competitive electricity prices and scalable deployment will unlock strong cluster effects and ensure long-term, sustainable profitability for investments in charging stations.

Trend 5: Security and trustworthiness

Compared to passenger cars, commercial vehicles require higher charging power and a larger proportion of energy storage system (ESS) capacity in charging stations. Therefore, security and reliability become fundamental requirements for charging networks. The comprehensive electrical safety architecture seamlessly protects people, vehicles and chargers and is reinforced by a robust cybersecurity foundation.

Trend 6: Liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging

Liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging provides excellent heat dissipation and protection, enabling reliable performance in increasingly distributed charging scenarios. In contrast, traditional air-cooled systems struggle in demanding environments such as high heat, humidity, salt spray and heavy dust. In the future, liquid cooling technology will be used in vehicles and chargers, enabling efficient megawatt charging and helping reduce overall vehicle costs.

Trend 7: DC-based ESS+charger

A DC-based ESS+charger system can effectively increase power capacity and help customers set up ultra-fast charging stations quickly and cost-effectively, even in locations with limited grid power. This system is ideal for upgrading older, low-capacity stations as ultra-fast charging stations can be quickly retrofitted or re-deployed with minimal network power, maximizing the ability to meet vehicle charging volumes.

Trend 8: Modular station design

The modular solution at station level was developed for the technical setup and commissioning of devices and adapts to a variety of charging scenarios. Their low cost, rapid deployment and ease of relocation make them a flexible choice, while their durable design ensures long-term value and protection for investors.

Trend 9: Campus microgrids

The grid-forming PV+ESS system integrates liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging technology and can operate in grid or off-grid mode. This forms a complete solution of “PV+ESS+Charger+Vehicle+Network” that increases power capacity, maximizes green energy usage and increases revenue through time arbitrage.

Trend 10: AI support

The intelligent further development of charging networks will enable seamless collaboration between networks, stations, chargers and vehicles. By breaking down digital silos, the charging experience for vehicle owners will be consistently improved and overall logistics and transportation efficiency will be increased.

Huawei will continue to work with partners to accelerate the deployment of seamless, high-quality ultra-fast charging networks and seize the opportunities of electrification of mobility.
