– Segway receives the HKQAA award; highlights advances in product sustainability and clean energy leadership
/PRNewswire/ — Segway, a global leader in mobility solutions, today announced that it has received the Award for Ecological and Sustainable Innovation and Technological Contribution from the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA). The award was presented on December 17 at the HKQAA Innovation and Technology Forum for a Green and Livable City, held at the Hong Kong Science Park.
Segway Received HKQAA Award
This recognition highlights Segway’s continued achievements in sustainability, particularly the eco-design principles exemplified by Apex shared electric scooters. D110 y Max S90L. In recent years, the company has continually expanded its commitment to sustainability through the launch of green products, responsible supply chains and clean energy production, responding to the growing expectations of cities, operators and end users around the world for cleaner and more transparent mobility options.
Eco-design: a lasting commitment to sustainable products
Segway has incorporated sustainability into the design and production of its products long before industry standards began to accelerate. Since 2023, the S90L received the industry’s first life cycle assessment (LCA)and three other Segway vehicles (including the D110) also earned LCA recognition, an internationally recognized method for assessing a product’s total environmental impact, from raw materials to end-of-life, embodying the company’s sustainable commitment to globally aligned standards and traceable environmental metrics.
Tangible sustainable progress is further reflected in Segway’s proactive adoption of recycled materials. Since 2021, Segway has been a pioneer in integrating recycled materials into shared electric scooters, a commitment that is reflected in specific models. The Apex D110, Max Plus operational.
Green production powered by sustainable energy
On the rooftop of the factory production line, Segway’s solar energy system has been in operation, providing clean energy for on-site consumption and supplying surplus energy to the grid. Following a year of steady growth in its share of renewable electricity, more than 65% of the facility’s electricity came from green sources between June and August 2025.
This initiative goes beyond powering Segway’s own production, as surplus clean electricity directly benefits the local community. By feeding excess energy into the regional grid, Segway makes a measurable contribution, which is quantified through green energy certificates (GECs), one for every 1,000 kWh supplied. Between June and December, a total of 143 GECs were generated.
“Integrating green energy into our production processes and feeding surplus energy into the national grid not only validates our environmental responsibility, but reflects how shared micromobility fits into the bigger picture,” said Zack Yan, vice general manager of Segway’s Commercial Mobility Division.
“By supplying clean energy to the national system, we support the country’s energy transition and demonstrate that micromobility is more than just a means of transportation: it is a fundamental element in the construction of smart, low-carbon cities, in line with national and international objectives.”
How Segway builds a sustainable supply chain ecosystem
Sustainability in production is never the work of a single entity, but rather depends on a fully integrated and environmentally friendly supply chain. For Segway, incorporating green principles begins in the first phase of production: aligning all supply chain partners with common sustainability goals. One initiative of this collaboration is the company’s Annual Supply Chain Convention, where Segway and its partners jointly drive sustainable innovation and improve product efficiency across the board.
Beyond the annual convention, Segway has implemented a robust supply chain management and assessment system to tighten the requirements that supply chain partners must meet. A key component of this system is a specific sustainability incentive mechanism integrated into the annual supplier audit process. This mechanism is designed to motivate partners to continually deepen their efforts and innovations in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) dimensions.
With the HKQAA award as new validation, Segway redoubles its mission to lead the sector towards a cleaner and more responsible future. By combining sustainable design with clean energy production and a deeply engaged supplier ecosystem, the company is demonstrating that low-carbon mobility is scalable, reliable and ready for global deployment. Segway will continue to push the boundaries of what sustainable micromobility can be.
