On November 13, the Global South Media and Think Tank Forum’s China-Africa Partnership Conference opened in Johannesburg, South Africa. A representative of China Southern Power Grid Co. (CSG) was invited to speak at the “Global South Talks” session during the opening ceremony, to share the company’s field experience in cooperation with Southern countries in the field of power grids.
Sun Shengjun, general manager of projects at the Regional Development Department for Africa and Europe at China Southern Power Grid International, described CSG’s experience and efforts to deepen energy ties between China and Africa in Cairo, Egypt. In 2023, Mr. Shengjun and his team arrived in Cairo to resolve chronic problems in the local power grid, including high line losses and poor operating performance. They gradually introduced CSG operational measures to reduce losses in the distribution network and implemented practical, scalable and repeatable “CSG solutions” for the local utility. In addition to its technical efforts, CSG has focused on developing a skilled local workforce through targeted training programs and technical knowledge sharing sessions. By adapting its technology to operational realities on the ground and investing in workforce training, the company sought to align its mature technical systems with local needs while encouraging local technical capabilities, thereby laying the foundation for long-term commitment.
Mr. Shengjun said CSG does not view energy cooperation as a one-way street, but as a partnership anchored in mutual benefit and shared growth. The company says it will continue to provide its technologies and management expertise to countries in the South, to deepen energy cooperation between China and Africa and support broader collaboration projects across the South.
