ECW announces $2 million in grants for children affected by floods in Pakistan

The First Emergency Response grant will reach 34,483 students through a local consortium led by the Rural Support Program Network.

/PRNewswire/ — The Education Cannot Wait Fund (ECW) today announced the launch of a $2 million emergency intervention grant to meet the immediate needs of children affected by devastating monsoon floods in Pakistan.

Education assessments reveal that over 367,000 school-aged children currently lack access to education in flood-affected districts, with damage reported in over 1,800 schools.

The 12-month grant will be provided by the Rural Support Programs Network (RSPN) in partnership with a consortium of local and national organizations including the National Rural Support Program (NRSP), Sahrad Rural Support Program (SRSP), Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) and the PAGE Foundation.

“RSPN is proud to continue its partnership with Education Cannot Wait and the Government of Pakistan to ensure that every child, especially girls, internally displaced persons and children with disabilities affected by the recent floods in Sialkot, Narowal, Jhang and Swat, have access to a safe, non-discriminatory and high-quality education,” said Bashir Anjum, CEO of RSPN. “Through this partnership, we intend to help communities in these regions rebuild resilient education systems, restore hope and support children to return to learning in a safe and caring environment. Together we will turn dreams into opportunities and transform education into lasting hope for those most in need.”

This locally led response will provide life-saving educational support to 34,000 girls and boys in flood-affected provinces of Pakistan.

According to educational evaluation results, over 367,000 school-age children are currently without access to education in flood-affected regions, with damage reported in over 1,800 schools.

ECW’s investment will be used to renovate damaged schools, build temporary learning spaces, provide educational materials to raise awareness of issues of discrimination and gender equality, restore water and sanitation services and implement protective measures. The intervention activities are consistent with the Pakistan Humanitarian Assistance Plan and complement ECW’s current preventive, pre-emptive activities, under which materials reached their destinations before the flood.
