ECW announces $2 million donation for children affected by floods in Pakistan

The Emergency First Response grant will reach 34,483 students through a local consortium led by the Rural Support Programs Network

/PRNewswire/ –Education Cannot Wait (ECW) today announced a US$2 million Emergency First Response grant to address the urgent educational needs of children affected by Pakistan’s devastating monsoon floods.

Education assessments reveal that over 367,000 school-aged children currently lack access to education in flood-affected districts, with damage reported in over 1,800 schools.

The 12-month subsidy will be awarded by the Rural Support Programs Network (RSPN) in association with a consortium of local and national organizations including National Rural Support Program (NRSP), Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP), Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) and PAGE Foundation.

“RSPN is proud to continue our collaboration with Education Cannot Wait and the Government of Pakistan to ensure that all children, especially girls, internally displaced people and children with disabilities affected by the recent floods in Sialkot, Narowal, Jhang and Swat, have access to safe, inclusive and quality learning opportunities,” said Bashir Anjum, Chief Operating Officer of RSPN. “Through this collaboration, we seek to help communities in these districts rebuild resilient education systems, restore hope and support children to return to school in safe and nurturing environments. Together, we are transforming dreams into opportunities and turning education into lasting hope for the most vulnerable.”

The locally-led response will provide vital educational support to 34,000 girls and boys in Pakistan’s flood-affected provinces.

Educational assessments reveal that more than 367,000 school-age children currently lack access to education in flood-affected districts, and damage has been reported in more than 1,800 schools.

ECW’s investment will rehabilitate damaged schools, establish temporary learning spaces, provide inclusive and gender-responsive teaching materials, restore water and sanitation facilities, and implement protective measures. These interventions align with Pakistan’s Humanitarian Response Plan and complement ECW’s Anticipatory Action pilot program, which has already distributed materials ahead of the floods.
