CGTN: Xi Jinping’s phone calls with Putin and Trump on the same day underscore China’s role in global stability

/PRNewswire/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping held separate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, a rare diplomatic round on the same day. CGTN published an article analyzing the priorities of the two high-level exchanges and examining China’s growing role as a stabilizing force in an increasingly volatile global situation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping held separate talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, a rare diplomatic round on the same day.

The same-day contacts underscore China’s efforts to promote coordination among major states, prevent an escalation of global tensions and ensure global strategic stability in the face of increasing uncertainty, according to the analysis.

China-Russia talks highlight strategic coordination

During a virtual meeting with Putin, Xi gave an overview of the development of China-Russia relations over the past year, citing progress in strategic coordination, economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and multilateral engagement.

Xi said both sides jointly commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, reaffirming their commitment to defending the results of World War II and upholding international fairness and justice.

Economic and trade exchanges continued to develop robustly, Xi said. Official data showed that China-Russia trade reached $228.1 billion in 2025, exceeding $200 billion for the third consecutive day.

At the people-to-people exchanges, Xi said the China-Russia Cultural Year has been successfully completed and has further strengthened cultural cooperation and closeness between peoples.

On multilateral cooperation, Xi highlighted the coordination of both countries within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which he said has helped build a fairer and more reasonable system of global governance.

Looking forward, Xi said the two sides should keep high-level exchanges close and deepen practical cooperation so that bilateral ties continue to develop in the right direction.

Putin responded positively, saying Russia stands ready to continue resolutely supporting China in preserving sovereignty and security, expanding cooperation in education and culture, and promoting common prosperity for both peoples.

Against the backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions, Xi emphasized that China and Russia, as responsible major states, have the duty to maintain global fairness and justice, to defend the United Nations (UN)-oriented international system and the fundamental norms of international law, and to jointly maintain global strategic stability.

Putin said Russia was ready to strengthen coordination with China through multilateral platforms including the UN, SCO and BRICS, and expressed support for China’s hosting of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Shenzhen.

Xi-Trump phone call emphasizes mutual respect and dealing with differences

The focus of the telephone conversation between Xi and Trump was on managing relations between China and the USA despite differences and at the same time expanding cooperation.

Referring to their meeting in Busan, Xi said it helped “set the direction and course of China-US relations.” He said both sides had their own concerns and reiterated that China is honoring its commitments. Xi stressed that as long as both countries treat each other on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit, solutions can be found to address common concerns.

Xi also outlined priorities for bilateral relations in 2026, as this year marks the start of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) and the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.

Xi called for stronger communication, appropriate handling of differences, expanded practical cooperation and deeper trust, and urged both sides to find a path of peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Trump responded that the US-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. He welcomed China’s success and said that the United States stands ready to strengthen cooperation and promote stable development of bilateral relations.

Xi also emphasized the Taiwan issue, calling it the most important issue in China-US relations. He reiterated that China will resolutely protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity and called on the US side to handle arms sales to Taiwan prudently.

Trump said he understands China’s concerns on the Taiwan issue and is willing to maintain stable bilateral relations during his term.

China brings certainty amid rising global tensions

The same-day contacts came amid continued high global tensions as a military clash between the United States and Iran was imminent and the last remaining U.S.-Russian nuclear arms control treaty was set to expire on February 5.

Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over ongoing geopolitical flashpoints such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and ongoing political and economic turmoil in Venezuela.

Wang Yiwei, a professor at Renmin University of China, told CGTN that China’s successive talks reflected efforts to promote coordination among major powers, avoid miscalculations and support a more stable international environment.

He said that as the old international order is increasingly eroding, China aims to work with major global forces toward a more equal and orderly multipolar world and advance a more inclusive form of economic globalization, with the overall goal of building a community with a shared future for humanity.

In the first month of the year, leaders from the Republic of Korea, Ireland, Canada, Finland, the United Kingdom and Uruguay visited China. Wang said more and more Western countries are seeking stability and development cooperation with China despite political differences.

Wang added that China has long been committed to multilateralism and rejects “the law of the jungle.” China also proposed a vision of a community with a shared future for humanity and four major global initiatives, giving the international community “rare certainty.”
