The new EUDI wallet consumer study from IDnow shows why consumers still lack trust, what hurdles exist in existing verification processes and what functions will be crucial for the acceptance of the EUDI wallet.
/PRNewswire/ — A few months before the launch of the EUDI wallet, planned for December 2026, digital identity and fraud prevention provider IDnow is publishing the results of a consumer survey of 1,000 adults in Germany and France. The results show that just over half of consumers (52%) are aware of the EUDI wallet so far. At the same time, the technology hits a market in which complicated verification processes are already costing financial service providers customers. It is therefore crucial for providers to gain the trust of consumers.
Those surveyed see a clear need for improvement in existing identity verification procedures. Almost half (48%) say they often abandon transactions if the verification process is too complicated or takes too long.
Security and transparency count more than fast processes
In order for the EUDI wallet to be accepted by consumers, security is crucial. 42 percent of those surveyed cited better protection against fraud as the most important factor for use. For almost a third (31%), greater control over what data they disclose is of central importance. 30 percent would like more transparency and would like to be able to understand which data is being used. Faster and simpler processes, on the other hand, are crucial for 28 percent.
Acceptance depends on the benefits
In principle, additional identity checks do not deter German consumers. 42 percent of those surveyed would accept additional checks if they increased security – even if it lengthens the process. If there was an increased risk of fraud, only 15 percent would still opt for fewer controls.
Almost two thirds (64%) of German consumers also say they would be more likely to use the EUDI wallet if they could confirm certain information, such as age, without disclosing all the information. This principle of “selective disclosure” means that only the data necessary for the respective purpose is shared.
The change to a digital wallet is taking place gradually
EU member states are obliged to make the EUDI wallet available to their citizens by December 2026 and banks must accept the wallet by December 2027. Nevertheless, it will probably take some time before the EUDI wallet becomes widespread. When asked how they would prefer to prove their identity when opening an account, German consumers do not have a consistent answer. 26 percent prefer personal identity verification on site, 16 percent prefer reading an NFC chip and 13 percent each prefer a digital identity wallet or a video call with an employee. Ten percent would prefer to submit their ID along with a selfie.
As digital wallets become more widespread, other methods will not disappear. Rather, banks must be able to offer their customers the appropriate procedure depending on the required level of security and at the same time make the process as simple as possible – as the recently published IDnow Trust Platform makes possible.
“The data is clear: German consumers understand the problems that the EUDI wallet is designed to solve, but they are not yet convinced that it is the right solution. They know that identity fraud is on the rise, online verification doesn’t work and that sharing more data than necessary poses real risks. But so far they don’t know a solution that they can trust. This is exactly the gap that the EUDI wallet needs to close,” said Philippe Morel, CEO of IDnow.

methodology
The study was conducted online in June 2026 by Sapio Research on behalf of IDnow among 1,000 German adults aged 18 to 80. The sample was weighted according to age and gender in order to be representative of the German population.
