IDnow publishes its survey on the EUDI Wallet: consumers interested but cautious before its deployment in December

IDnow’s latest survey highlights the trust gap, the cost of complex journeys and the features that will drive EUDI Wallet adoption.

/PRNewswire/ — IDnow, European leader in digital identity and fraud prevention, today publishes the full results of its consumer survey on the EUDIWallet, which is scheduled to be deployed in December 2026.

Conducted among 2,000 respondents in France and Germany, the survey reveals that the EUDI Wallet is entering a market where its awareness remains low, where complex journeys are already expensive for financial services and where consumer trust remains to be won.

According to those surveyed, current identity verification processes have significant room for improvement: almost half (46%) say they frequently abandon a transaction when verification is too complex or takes too long.

Security and transparency rather than speed

Security will be the determining factor in consumer acceptance of the EUDI Wallet: 40% of respondents cite better protection against fraud as the determining criterion for its adoption. Nearly a third (31%) also place greater control over the data they share as central importance, while 29% expect more transparency over how data is used. In comparison, faster and simpler processes are only decisive for 28% of respondents.

Adoption conditioned on concrete benefits

Additional identity checks do not generally represent a barrier for consumers: 47% of respondents would accept them if they would improve security, even at the cost of longer procedures. Conversely, faced with an increased risk of fraud, only 13% would opt for fewer controls.

Nearly two-thirds of consumers (63%) also say they are more likely to use the EUDI Wallet if it allows them to prove an attribute, such as their age, without having to hand over all of their information. This ability to share only strictly necessary data, according to the principle of “selective disclosure”, constitutes the main added value of the EUDI Wallet.

An adoption that will not happen overnight

Although European Union member states are required to make the EUDI Wallet available to every citizen by December 2026 and banks must accept it from December 2027, the survey shows that widespread adoption will likely take some time.

Asked which method they would prefer to use to verify their identity when opening a bank account, consumers remain divided: 24% prefer in-person verification, 14% a digital identity wallet, 13% scanning an NFC chip, 11% sending an ID accompanied by a selfie and 10% a video call with an agent.

The rise of digital wallets will therefore not make other methods disappear. The best prepared establishments will be those capable of directing each customer towards the path that suits them and the level of guarantee required, without disruption in the experience. It is precisely with this objective that the IDnow Trust Platform was recently launched.

« The data is clear: European consumers understand the problem that the EUDI Wallet is supposed to solve, but they are not yet convinced that it is the solution. They know that identity fraud is on the rise, that online verification is showing its limits and that sharing more data than necessary carries real risks. However, they have not yet found a solution they can trust: this is precisely the gap that the EUDI Wallet will have to fill », déclare Philippe Morel, CEO d’IDnow.

The consumer survey on the EUDI Wallet, entitled « The digital identity divide»provides a detailed analysis of current digital identity habits, consumer expectations, security and privacy concerns, barriers to adoption, and attitudes toward future use cases.

Méthodologie

The IDnow consumer survey on the EUDI Wallet was carried out online by Sapio Research in June 2026 among 2,000 adults aged 18 to 80 in France (1,000 respondents) and Germany (1,000 respondents). The samples were weighted according to age and gender.
