Huawei unveils latest networking strategy for future energy systems at The Smarter E 2026

/PRNewswire/ — Speaking at an industry fair in Munich, Huawei Digital Power’s Smart PV and ESS product line president, Steven Zhou, said the company’s strategic focus is on integrated grid solutions that enhance grid stability to support a high share of renewable energy in Europe.

In Europe, the penetration of wind and solar energy is expected to reach 64% by 2030. At the same time, the power grid faces challenges – such as reduced grid resilience and weakened system power – due to the high complexity of dispatching and the declining share of traditional synchronous generators.

In response, European markets are increasing investment in the grid, expanding the deployment of grid-forming battery energy storage systems (BESS), developing new grid regulations that include grid-building requirements, and accelerating the transition of the energy market from simple energy arbitrage to diversified supporting grid services. Speaking at The Smarter E 2026, Huawei Digital Power’s Smart PV and ESS product line president Steven Zhou said these moves send a clear signal that “future photovoltaic (PV) products and BESS must evolve to become the primary energy source.”

As new energy technologies have become the primary source of energy, the industry has entered a period of active innovation, moving from single-point innovation to integrated innovation. Thanks to their ability to create a grid, hybrid PV-BESS solutions accelerate the replacement of traditional thermal power plants. Key networking functions – such as grid-failure start, inertia support and short-circuit current support – have been fully verified under all operating conditions and time frames in the power system, while the technical system is constantly being refined.

In his speech, Zhou described how Huawei’s strategic direction has evolved in response to network developments. “In 2020, we introduced LUNA, the industry’s first intelligent energy storage system,” Zhou said. “Named after the moon, LUNA was designed to guard the night and ensure that clean energy no longer ends at sunset. And as you know, our solar inverter is called SUN. Born from the sun, it powers the day.” Zhou said that the role of energy storage has changed its definition in order to guarantee the stability of the entire network, and announced that Huawei has officially upgraded the LUNA brand to LUTERRA. “The name LUTERRA comes from the word ‘Terra’ – Earth. We are moving from lighting up the night to protecting our planet.”

In line with the new Smart PV strategy, Huawei uses its advantages in integrating the core 4T technologies (bit, watt, heat, battery) for continuous innovation to accelerate the construction of a modern energy system, including solutions for all user segments and scenarios. In his speech at The Smarter E 2026, Zhou also detailed the highlights of commercial and industrial projects in Europe using the company’s all-in-one solution that integrates PV, BESS, EV chargers and AI planning. For example, in Germany, the AHS business park achieved a 10% increase in sales after only two years of operating a universal solution from Huawei, and in Spain, as Zhou noted, “the electricity bill of the Carrefour supermarket has decreased by almost 40%, and the payback period is only five years.”

Huawei is preparing for the development of the electricity market. Zhou explained: “In the future, business models for BESS will become more diversified… With flexible hardware and software development, Huawei’s universal platform can adapt to all different business models and maximize benefits.”

Zhou says the demonstrations around the world — from Spain to Mongolia and from Germany to the Philippines — demonstrate the value of Huawei’s grid-building technology and “will strengthen our comprehensive smart PV and BESS solutions to bring maximum value to our customers while strengthening the stability of the high-renewable energy grid.”
