/PRNewswire/ — Segway, a global leader in mobility solutions, today announced that it has received theGreen and Sustainable Innovation and Technology Contribution Award of the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA). The award was presented on December 17 during the HKQAA Green and Livable City Innovation & Technology Forum, held at the Hong Kong Science Park.
Segway Received HKQAA Award
This recognition highlights Segway’s continued achievements in sustainability, particularly the green design principles exemplified by the Apex shared electric scooters. D110 et Max S90L. In recent years, the company has continuously strengthened its commitment to sustainability by launching eco-friendly products, establishing responsible supply chains and producing clean energy, to meet the growing expectations of cities, operators and end users for cleaner and more transparent mobility options around the world.
Green by design: A long-standing commitment to sustainable products
Segway integrated sustainability into the design and production of its products long before industry standards began to accelerate. Since 2023, the S90L model has benefited from the industry’s first life cycle analysis (LCA)3 additional Segway vehicles (D110 included) have also achieved LCA recognition – an internationally recognized method for assessing the total environmental impact of a product, from raw materials to end of life, concretizing the company’s commitment to sustainability with globally aligned standards and traceable environmental measures.
Segway’s proactive adoption of recycled materials demonstrates tangible sustainable progress. Since 2021, Segway has pioneered the integration of recycled materials into shared electric scooters – a commitment illustrated in specific models. The Apex D110, Max Plus market, displaying both environmental and operational excellence.
Green production powered by sustainable energy
On the roof of the factory’s production line, the Segway solar energy system is in operation, providing clean energy for on-site consumption and providing surplus energy to the grid. After a year of steady growth in its share of renewable electricity, more than 65% of the facility’s electricity came from green sources between June and August 2025.
This initiative goes beyond powering Segway’s own production, with surplus clean electricity directly benefiting the local community. By injecting excess energy into the regional network, Segway makes a measurable contribution, quantified by Green Energy Certificates (GEC) – one certificate for every 1000kWh supplied. In total, 143GECs were generated between June and December.
“Integrating green energy into our production processes and injecting excess energy back into the national grid not only validates our environmental responsibility, but also reflects where shared micromobility fits into the bigger picture,” said Zack Yan, vice general manager of Commercial Mobility at Segway.
“By powering the national system with clean energy, we support the country’s energy transition and demonstrate that micromobility is more than just a means of transport: it is a concrete building block of low-carbon smart cities, aligned with national and international goals.”
How Segway is building a sustainable supply chain ecosystem
Production sustainability is never the work of a single entity, it depends on a fully integrated and environmentally responsible supply chain. For Segway, integrating green principles begins at the first stage of production: aligning each supply chain partner with common sustainability goals. One of the initiatives of this collaboration is the company’s annual supply chain convention, where Segway and its partners participate in sustainable innovation and improving product efficiency at all levels.
Beyond the annual convention, Segway has implemented a robust supply chain management and evaluation system to strengthen the requirements placed on supply chain partners. One of the key elements of this system is a sustainability incentive mechanism integrated into the annual supplier audit process. This mechanism is designed to motivate partners to continually deepen their efforts and innovations in environmental, social and governance (ESG) dimensions.
With the HKQAA award as further validation, Segway is redoubling its efforts to lead the industry towards a cleaner, more responsible future. By combining sustainable design with clean energy production and a deeply engaged supplier ecosystem, the company proves that low-carbon mobility is scalable, reliable and ready for global deployment. Segway will continue to push the boundaries of what sustainable micromobility can be.
